Useful, safe, & unique woodshop skills.

A woodshop ready for its first class: a table saw in the middle, a bandsaw, drill press and planer on dust collection, a lathe, a router table, a pegboard of clamps and lumber racks

An imagined scene, not a photo: The Atrium is under construction now.

Why it’s here

472square feet

Our wood shop teaches the fundamentals, from table saw and bandsaw basics to true craftsmanship. It also invites students to think critically about Tahoe's wood economy. Our forests are logged, yet the wood we build with is shipped in, and much of what's cut locally is treated as waste. For an innovative kid this means opportunity. We hope students will be proud to build products from real Tahoe wood.

From the forest to the bench

Our forests are logged, yet the wood we build with is shipped in. Here is one way a student could follow a board the whole way through this room.

  1. A A Tahoe log From our own forests Logged here, too often treated as waste.
  2. B Mill it flat Jointer · planer Rough boards, made true and square.
  3. C Cut the seat Bandsaw A round seat, cut freehand to the line.
  4. D Turn the legs Woodturning lathe Three legs, beads and coves by hand.
  5. E Put it together Drill press · sander Something to be proud of, in real Tahoe wood.
